Arcadia board hears Wanek Center update

At the Arcadia school board’s regular May meeting, Wanek Center Director Kristine Rugotzke provided an update indicating the center is on track to meet its $260,000 income goal by 2025.

Annual income is increasing steadily, with yearly growth of $20,000 to $30,000. However, with expenses to keep the center operational, last year it still had around a $90,000 deficit.

Rugotzke’s presentation also highlighted various programs offered at the Wanek Center, including karate, fitness classes, yoga, Zumba, and room rentals.

During the meeting, board member Vicente Moreno raised the idea of making the facility accessible 24 hours a day. Rugotzke explained that 24-hour access would require enhanced security measures, as the center would not be staffed during those hours. Entry could potentially be managed using key fobs or facial recognition technology.

She also reviewed the center’s budget and building-related expenses as part of the financial overview.

The board also discussed raising salaries for non-experienced teachers with a bachelor’s degree to $43,000 annually, which is still below surrounding districts who pay $45,000 annually
