Red Hawks split games with Viroqua to start season

It took a little extra time for the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau baseball team to finally get their 2026 season underway. That anticipated first week of game action sent them straight away into conference play, where they put a tick in both the win and loss columns.

The Red Hawks (1-1, 1-1 Coulee) earned a series split with Viroqua (1-1, 1-1) when the two teams squared off twice last week, with the road team winning on both occasions.

G-E-T is set to host Westby in conference action on Thursday, followed by a pair of non-conference road games against Mauston on Friday and Altoona on Monday. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. for each game.

The Red Hawks held off a late rally from the Blackhawks to survive and win their season and Coulee opener last Tuesday in Viroqua.

G-E-T came out of the gates swinging (pun somewhat intended) by posting three runs in their first taste of game action, with a Wyatt Oines two-run single and a Daxson Sow RBI single in the top of the first.

Luke Herman’s two-out RBI double in the fifth extended the Red Hawk advantage to 6-1, though it wasn’t all smooth sailing from there.

Errors in the sixth and seventh inning helped Viroqua trim the deficit to 6-4, and they had a runner at third with one out in the bottom of the seventh. However, Oines secured the save by retiring the next two batters.

Caiden Brady notched the win for G-E-T by allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits, three walks and two hit batters to go along with 10 strikeouts in six innings. At the plate, Oines and Scow collected two hits apiece.

Two days after the Red Hawks rode into their home ballpark and handed them a loss, the Blackhawks returned the favor this past Thursday in Galesville.

Following two scoreless innings to open the game, each team tallied a run in the third. G-E-T scored their run courtesy of Mitch Thell’s two-out RBI single that drove in Sam De Jager and tied the score at 1-1.

From that point forward, it was all Viroqua as they scored twice in the fourth, thrice in the sixth and added a final run in the top of the seventh.

De Jager and Thell each singled twice for the Red Hawks, who failed to get an extra-base hit on the evening.
