Arcadia upset bid falls short

The Arcadia girls basketball team had the lead late, but was unable to pull off the upset in Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association quarterfinal play last Wednesday.

The (9) Raiders went to (8) Adams-Friendship and had a lead with about five minutes left in the game, but the Green Devils made enough plays down the stretch to get the 42-38 win.

The loss gave the Raiders an 8-19 record to end the season. They’re expected to return much of their roster as Kianna Suchla was the only senior on the team.

A three pointer by Breah Golden gave the Raiders a 32-31 lead, but they went cold from there as the Green Devils scored the next six points.

Harley Parr answered Golden’s three with one of her own to put A-F back on top. With about three minutes left in the game, Arcadia’s Casidi Pehler fouled out and A-F took advantage.

With Pehler out of the center of Arcadia’s attack, the Green Devils were able to get to the basket. Evelyn Shaw scored the next basket to put them ahead by four. After Golden missed a three pointer, a free throw made it a five-point game.

Golden connected on another three, making the score 37-35 with 53 seconds left.

The Raiders were forced to foul and A-F missed the front end of a one-and-one, but they got the rebound and Parr made two free throws to make it a two-possession game with 40 seconds remaining. After an Arcadia miss, Morgan Irey made two free throws.

Golden connected on another three pointer, making the score 41-38 with five seconds left. The Green Devils made a free throw on their ensuing possession, clinching the win.

Despite fouling out with three minutes left, Pehler led Arcadia with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Golden added 13 points and nine rebounds.

A-F seemed to be in control, leading 29-21 in the second half before the Raiders scored eight straight to tie the game at 29 on a basket by Suchla, who scored four in the game.

Arcadia struggled from the field, shooting 25.5 percent in the game. They were nine-for-13 from the free-throw line.
