Indee softball team wins three in busy week

The Independence/Gilmanton softball team was able to pick up three wins in five games played last week.

The Indees dropped the first two games of the week, falling to Cochrane-Fountain City on Monday and Melrose-Mindoro on Tuesday. They rebounded with a win over Pepin/Alma on Thursday before sweeping a doubleheader against Augusta on Friday.

The three wins to close the week evened I/G’s record at 4-4 with all their games coming in Dairyland Conference play. 

It’ll be another busy week for the Indees as they hosted Pepin/Alma on Monday before heading to Blair-Taylor for a doubleheader on Tuesday. On Thursday, they’ll go to Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran before hosting C-FC on Friday. That will be followed with a tournament on Saturday.

C-FC 11 I/G 1

The Pirates took control of the game late as the Indees struggled offensively.

C-FC scored three runs in the first inning, but I/G kept the game close. 

Aubrie Pronschinske hit a one-out single in the top of the third and scored on a groundout. The Indees had a chance to tie the game in the fourth with two runners on, but a strikeout ended the inning. The Pirates broke the game open in the bottom half of that inning. 

C-FC had five singles, a double and a walk as part of a five-run fourth inning. They added another in the fifth then ended the game by mercy rule in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run single that made the score 11-1.

Pronschinske’s hit was one of two the Indees had in the game, Hilari Klopp had the other, while C-FC finished with 15 hits.

Lydia Evans took the loss as she struck out 10 and walked three. The Indees were hurt by errors too as three of C-FC’s runs were unearned.

Mel-Min 11 I/G 10

I/G’s offense got back on track, but they couldn’t get the big hit when needed.

The teams entered the ninth inning tied at 10 before the Mustangs hit consecutive singles then brought a run home on a ground out. The Indees got one runner on and in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn’t bring her home. 

The Mustangs led off the game with a home run then led off the second with another home run, but the Indees seemed to take control with six runs in the bottom of the second.

The first run scored on a single by Leah Sylla. Two walks with the bases loaded put the Indees ahead before Amia Ives singled in two more, making the score 5-2. Klopp then scored on a wild pitch. 

The Mustangs got one back in the top of the third then two in the fourth. The teams exchanged runs in the bottom of the fourth and top of the fifth before a wild sixth inning.

The Indees led 7-6 before two straight singles and a ground out tied the game for the Mustangs in the top of the sixth. Kaitlynn Severson then hit her second home run of the game, this time a two-run shot that put the Mustangs ahead by 9-6.

I/G came right back as Klopp homered with one out in the bottom half of the inning the Maggie Woychik tripled in two runs, putting the Indees ahead 10-9.

The Indees couldn’t end the game in the next inning, however. A one-out walk came back to hurt as a single tied the game. 

The Indees had two on with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but a groundout ended the inning. They had one on with no outs in the eighth, but a strikeout followed by a groundout and a pop up ended that threat.

The Indees had 11 hits as Ives, Rhianna Theisen and Woychik all had two. Klopp, Ives and Woychik all ahd two RBIs. I/G also had seven walks and took advantage of five Mel-Min errors.

Evans took the loss, pitching the last three innings with four hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Sylla pitched the first six innings allowing 13 hits and two walks while striking out five. 

I/G 10 P/A 7

The Indees held off a late rally by the Eagles to get the road win.

I/G came out strong with two hits and two walks as part of a three-run first inning. The Eagles scored in the bottom of the first before Klopp singled in a run in the second. The Indees added runs in the third and fourth innings as they took a 6-1 lead.

A three-run fourth inning put the Eagles back in the game, but the Indees retook control in the sixth.

One run scored on a Klopp triple before Adison Pronschinske doubled in another. Another run scored on a groundout and a fourth in the inning came home on an error.

Two walks, two hits and an error brought three runs home for the Eagles in the bottom of the seventh, but a runner was thrown out at third to end the game.

Klopp had three of I/G’s eight hits while Adison Pronschinske added two.

Evans picked up the win, tossing a complete game with nine hits and eight walks allowed while walking three. 

I/G 5 Augusta 0

Leah Sylla allowed just two hits and one walk in the shutout win.

The Indees took the lead in the bottom of the first as Aubrie Pronschinske reached on an error and scored on another error. 

They added four more runs in the third as Aubrie Pronschinske led off with a single and scored when Klopp doubled. Adison Pronschinske then brought home two runs with a single, putting the Indees ahead 5-0. 

That was plenty for Sylla who didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning as she struck out five.

The Indees had five hits as Klopp was three-for-three.

I/G 6 Augusta 3

The Indees got another strong pitching performance as they held on for a win.

Evans only allowed one hit in the game as she struck out three and walked five. 

I/G’s offense got started early as they scored one in the top of the first. Augusta matched that in the bottom half of the inning, but the Indees scored again in the second as Cowen singled in a run.

Adison Pronschinske added an RBI single in the third before Ives scored on a double steal, making the score 4-1.

The Indees seemed to take complete control in the top of the fifth as Kassidi Dejno doubled in another run before Aubrie Pronschinske grounded out to score Cowen and put the Indees ahead by five runs.

Three errors made the bottom of the fifth interesting, but the Indees held on for the win.

I/G had 10 hits in the game as Aubrie Pronschinske was three-for-four and Cowen went three-for-three.
