Red Hawks score 31 runs in three games last week

The bats were flying and the runs were stacking up for the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School baseball team last week, as the Red Hawks scored 31 runs in three games.

The Red Hawks (5-4 this season) handily beat Sparta 20-7 on Tuesday before splitting a doubleheader with Viroqua on Thursday.

Black River Falls was set to visit G-E-T on Monday before the Red Hawks faced off with Arcadia at home on Tuesday. They were set to finish this week with a Thursday game at Luther.

It took four innings for the visitors to rack up 20 runs and 17 hits in a win over the Spartans on Tuesday.

Sparta hung around by scoring six runs in three innings, but the Red Hawks had already piled on 15 runs by that time.

Zach Grams racked up four hits and three runs to lead G-E-T, which got two hits from five different players and a double from both Jack Beedle and Cole Williams. Nine players recorded at least one hit.

Ethan Stoner threw four innings, allowing six hits and seven runs (five earned). Warren Stoner closed the game, allowing one hit and one walk to one strikeout.

The first game of Thursday’s doubleheader started slow and ended in a rush of offense. The Red Hawks scored a run in each of the third and fourth innings, adding two more in the bottom of the fifth before closing the scoring with five runs in the sixth.

Three G-E-T pitchers combined to throw 10 strikeouts and allow just three hits.

Viroqua allowed 12 hits to the host Red Hawks, three of them off the bat of Williams. Warren Stoner and Brady Seiling had two hits.

Williams paced G-E-T with three RBI and joined Ethan Stoner and Seiling, all hitting a double.

The start was ideal for the Red Hawks in game two of Thursday’s doubleheader. 

The ending? Not so much.

Ethan Stoner hit a hard ground ball to score Zach Grams and Owen Eddy in the top of the first inning and give G-E-T a 2-0 lead. It was as close as they would get to victory after Viroqua scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to walk away with a win.

Collin Handke threw all six innings for the Red Hawks and struck out eight batters, walking three. He allowed three hits. Viroqua held G-E-T to three hits.
