Ettrick to upgrade heating system in village hall
The Ettrick village board voted last Tuesday to spend roughly $9,900 to upgrade the heading system in village hall.
Village public works director Courtney Kotlarz presented three bids to the village board. Two were 85 percent efficiency systems, one costing roughly $7,000 and the other $11,000. The third bid, which was ultimately accepted, came in at roughly $9,900, but the system offered 95 percent efficiency.
“If we’re gonna do it, do it right,” trustee Harold Olson said. “Go with the high efficiency.”
Board members unanimously agreed to accept the bid for the high efficiency system from Ziegler Heating and Air Conditioning. The other bids came from Schneider Heating and Air Conditioning and Savage Heating and Air Conditioning. Federal funds received through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) will be used to pay for the system.
The board did not take action related to the removal of asbestos in the basement of the village hall. Kotlarz presented a quote for about $5,000 to remove asbestos that is wrapped around the pipe.
Kotlarz said the asbestos doesn’t present a risk unless the pipe is disturbed and the company putting in the new heating system would not need to touch the pipe.
“I think we should remove the asbestos,” John Beirne, board president, said. “I know it costs money, but if you delay it, what do you gain?”
Trustees, however, thought they would be fine leaving the asbestos as long as there were signs informing people the asbestos was there and that they should not touch the pipe.
The board heard of a proposal from a person who would be willing to pay for new flooring in the Redsten Shelter. The proposal was to put flooring that resembled a garage floor, including chips for better traction.
While trustees appreciated the offer, they seemed to agree that they needed to do more homework before accepting.
“We have to make sure it’s done right,” trustee Marc Baures said. “I’m not saying it’s not going to be done right, but we have to be sure.”
Trustees agreed the village should get quotes to see what the cost to resurface the floor would be.
