Wildcats top Norse to take second in DC wrestling
Five straight wins put the Wildcats in control and they held on to beat Whitehall lst week Tuesday to claim second place in the Dairyland Conference standings.
Independence/Gilmanton had already clinched a first-place finish and closed out its dual season with a win over Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau/Melrose-Mindoro Varsity Reserve (GMVR). The only question was second place and that race proved to be as close as expected with B-T edging out the Norse, 41-39.
The win gave B-T a 2-1 conference record while Whitehall finished 1-2 and Cochrane-Fountain City — which lost to Whitehall earlier in the evening — finished 0-3. All four teams wrestled in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division Three La Crosse Aquinas regional on Saturday (see story elsewhere in Sports).
B-T 41 Whitehall 39
After Whitehall scored the first nine points, B-T scored 29 straight to take control.
Whitehall opened with a win by Matthew Poulos (145) over Ryan Flynn before Broc Coburn topped Colton Koxlien by injury forfeit, making the score 9-0.
B-T got on the board when Gunar Koxlien (160) pinned Theodore Mikesell. That was the first of five straight wins for the Wildcats as Ben Lien (170) pinned Luke Matejka, Jackson Shramek (182) beat Eric Kleinhans by technical fall; Brian Rogstad (195) pinned Lukas Paske and Dylan Elvaker (220) received a foreit.
Whitehall received two straight forfeits — Corbin Larson (285) and Frank Juresh (106) before Nolan Thompson (113) pinned Julian Doerr to bring the Norse within two. Whitehall regained the lead when Andy Flores (120) received a forfeit, but B-T got the points back when Whitehall forfeited to Easton Rogstad (126).
Billy Miller (132) clinched the win for the Wildcats when he pinned Ashton Hanson in the third period of a match that was tied.
Whitehall finished with a win as Oriah Anderson (138) pinned Juan Lopez.
Whitehall 54 C-FC 18
The Pirates won all three matches that were wrestled, but forfeits gave the Norse the dual win.
C-FC recorded three pins as Abraham Henderson (152) topped Coburn, Deklan Lambert (106) stuck Juresh and Noah Henderson (113) defeated Nolan Thompson.
Whitehall received nine forfeits, which made up its 54 points and won the dual.
I/G 48 GMVR 21
The Indees scored 42 straight points to get the win.
The Titans won the first three matches with Scott Johnson (138) beating Sam Marsolek, 14-10, before Jeron Hansen (145) and Landon Windsor (152) recorded pins over Gabe Pietrek and Max Marsolek.
A pin by Mason Gierok (160) over Hunter Lefler got the Indees on the board, but GMVR’s Mason Hale (170) stuck Jose Cantu Lucio to get those points back for the Titans.
Those would be the last points GMVR would score, however.
Gavin Bragger (182) pinned Calvin Davis before Mitchell Halverson (195), Drew Bragger (220), Jacobo Medina (285), Gracie Rombalski (106) and Cora Sonsalla (113) all received forfeits.
Owen Gierok (126) closed out the scoring by pinning Gunnar Kremer.
