Snowfall totals higher than recent years, short of record

Signs of Spring?

Trempealeau County snowmobile trails closed early last week as temperatures rose into the 40s. Time will tell if the trails will open again this season, but reports from the National Weather Service in La Crosse indicate that riders have gotten more time on their sleds this year than typical due to an above-average amount of snow hitting the area.  (Times photograph by Andrew Dannehy)

If you think Trempealeau County has gotten more snow than usual so far this year, you’re right, but the county still isn’t close to the record set in the 2018-19 season.

According to National Weather Service data collected in Trempealeau, there have been 26.4 inches of snow in the county this year. Reports from Alma have shown 31.8 inches and Black River Falls more than 20 inches, though January’s total hadn’t been factored in to the BRF total as of late last week.

In all three cases, the total snowfall amount is greater than what fell in the entirety of the 2021-22 year. The same data shows 15.2 inches falling throughout the 2021-22 snow season in Trempealeau, 18.4 in Black River Falls and 25.1 in Alma. Trempealeau and Alma are also higher than the 202-21 totals.

The average snowfall through January in Trempealeau is 19.7 inches with February being the second-snowiest month of the season, averaging 10.5 inches. If the averages hold through, Trempealeau would total 45 inches of snow this season, which would be the sixth-most since 1999-2000. Though, even that would be far short of the record set in 2018-19 when the 67.4 inches fell on the county including a new monthly record of 39.5 in February.
