Norse softball team struggles in conference loss to Mustangs

Whitehall scored one run in the bottom of the first, but they were already in a big hole.

Melrose-Mindoro scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning and Whitehall was never able to catch up. The loss put Whitehall’s record at 1-9 as they have a busy slate before tournament play begins next week.

After a doubleheader against Cochrane-Fountain City on Monday of this week, Whitehall played at Pepin/Alma on Tuesday. They’ll be home against Eleva-Strum on Thursday before playing two in Augusta on Friday. Their last regular season game is set for Monday in Independence.

Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association play is set to begin on Thursday.

Mel-Min 19 Whitehall 1

The Mustangs came out swinging with 10 runs on six hits — including a three-run home run — in the top of the first.

Whitehall’s only run came in the bottom of the first when Harlow Foss led off with a double and scored on a groundout.

But Whitehall couldn’t stop Mel-Min. The Mustangs added five in the second, one more in he third and three in the fifth.

Foss and Olivia Killian had Whitehall’s only hits.

The Mustangs had 12 hits as Ashlyn Clatt got the start for Whitehall, pitching into the second inning before being replaced by Kelsie Klomsted. Klomsten pitched four innings with four hits, eight walks and two strikeouts. Clatt struck out one while issuing six walks and allowing eight hits.
