Norse drop six in DC play

While they were close in a few games, the Whitehall softball team lost all six last week.

The Norse were swept in a doubleheader against Cochrane-Fountain City on Monday before dropping games to Pepin/Alma on Tuesday and Eleva-Strum on Thursday. They were swept in another doubleheader, this time by Augusta, on Friday.

Whitehall (1-15) ended its regular season with a game at Independence/Gilmanton on Monday of this week. They’re the 10th seed in their Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association bracket and will play at (7) Osseo-Fairchild on Thursday. The winner of that game will play at (2) Melrose-Mindoro this coming Tuesday. 

C-FC 4 Whitehall 1

The Norse just couldn’t get their offense going as they dropped the first game of the doubleheader.

Whitehall’s only hit came in its first at-bat of the game as Carson Coburn singled and came around to score on an error that tied the game, 1-1.

The Norse kept C-FC in check until the third when the Pirates got three hits and scored three runs to go ahead by the final score.

Ashlyn Clatt took the loss for Whitehall, allowing eight hits and one walk as she struck out three.

C-FC 18 Whitehall 0

The Norse had two more hits than they managed in the first game, but they couldn’t slow C-FC down in the fourth.

The Pirates scored one run in each of the first three innings then exploded for 15 in the fourth.

Whitehall had three hits with three different players getting one. 

Kelsie Klomsten got the start and the loss for Whitehall. She held C-FC mostly in check until running into trouble in the fourth. Harlow Foss replaced her and finished the game. They combined to allow nine hits and 12 walks while striking out three. 

P/A 7 Whitehall 5

The Eagles scored six in the bottom of the first and Whitehall couldn’t catch up.

A/P took advantage of three walks and two errors by getting two hits as part of a six-run first inning. The Norse didn’t let the game get out of hand, however.

Zoey George singled in two runs for Whitehall in the top of the second. Clatt singled in one then scored herself on a wild pitch to bring the Norse within two at 6-4. It became a one-run game in the fourth as Klomsten led off with a single and scored on a groundout, but that’s as close as Whitehall would get.

The Eagles took advantage of four walks to add an insurance run in the fifth as Whitehall’s offense struggled the rest of the game.

Clatt took the loss, striking out four, while walking 10 and allowing six hits. 

E-S 22 Whitehall 0

The Norse were in the game until an 18-run fourth inning made it lopsided.

Whitehall defeated E-S earlier this season for its only win and were still in position to get a win, trailing 4-0 after three innings. In the fourth, however, the Norse had trouble hitting the strike zone and, when they did, the Cardinals made them pay. E-S scored 18 runs on nine walks, five hit batters, three hits and two errors. 

The Norse offense was quiet the entire game as they didn’t manage a single hit and only two walks.

Clatt pitched the first 2.2 innings for Whitehall before Klomsten came on, then Killian and Foss got the final out. 

Augusta 7 Whitehall 1

The Beavers scored at least one run in all five innings as they led throughout the game.

Augusta had three straight hits to plate one in the first. They added two more in the second and took a 4-0 lead with one in the third. 

Matejka singled home a run for Whitehall in the bottom of the third, but it was the only one they’d score. Augusta added two more in the fourth and one in the fifth to go ahead by the final.

Clatt took the loss allowing seven hits and five walks while striking out four.

Augusta 8 Whitehall 2

The Norse appeared to be in good position before the Beavers put up five runs in the third.

Herman singled and scored on an error to give Whitehall a 1-0 lead in the second. They doubled their lead in the third when Clatt had a two-base hit to score Coburn. 

The Beavers took control in the bottom of the third, however, as they plated five runs on two hits and two errors. They added three more in the fourth.

Clatt took the loss again, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out three.
