Fourth-quarter push carries Mondovi past Red Hawks in gridiron opener

A pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns gave Mondovi the cushion it needed to escape week one of the 2023 Wisconsin prep football season with a 20-0 win over the visiting Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau Red Hawks.

The hosts scored in the first quarter on a 1-yard rushing touchdown from Peyton Snyder, who would finish the game as the most productive player for either team — Snyder added the first of two touchdown runs for Mondovi in the fourth quarter and finished with 92 yards on the ground.

Mondovi closed the scoring with a 59-yard burst from quarterback Jake Linse, who was restricted to just 51 passing yards by the G-E-T defense but helped the Buffaloes to a big day on the ground with 143 yards on 15 carries.

The Red Hawks were also productive running the ball, as Kyle Seiling collected 75 yards on 11 carries and teammate Max Knapmiller had 53 yards in 11 touches.

Mondovi held G-E-T to eight first downs in the game and four completed passes as G-E-T quarterback Ben Hansen finished his first varsity start 4-for-11 with 52 yards.

Jackson Burns (26) led the visitors in receiving yards, and Seiling had a pair of catches.

Mondovi kept G-E-T busy on defense, and multiple Red Hawks recorded at least five tackles. Knapmiller led the way with a game-high 11 1/2 tackles, and Seiling had nine of his own.

The Red Hawks will hope to rebound this Friday as Baldwin-Woodville (1-0) visits for G-E-T’s home opener.
