Whitehall sweeps home triangular, wins one at BRF

The Whitehall volleyball team opened its season with two close wins in a home triangular before losing a few close matches in a tournament at Black River Falls.
“There were a lot of close sets played these last two competition days with some really good teams,” Whitehall coach Cathy McCune said. “Overall, the girls played well as a team and showed some real improvement at times. They just need to continue to work hard on their fundamentals, aggressiveness and overall play.”
Whitehall took a big lead early in its first set of the season as it was ahead of Eleva-Strum by 10 points. The Cardinals surged back and tied the set, but the Norse scored two straight to end it with a 26-24 win. Whitehall went on to win the second set by the same score.
The Norse had an easier time, defeating Greenwood, 25-15, 25-20, to go 2-0 on the day.
Whitehall opened the BRF tournament with a win over Alma Center Lincoln in the first set, 25-18, but the Hornets buzzed back and won the next two, 25-13, 16-14.
The only win the Norse picked up in the tournament came against the host team as they defeated BRF, 25-11, 25-17. Whitehall was just a few points away from winning two more matches, however.
The Norse lost to Onalaska Luther by a combined five points, 25-22, 25-23 and fell to Melrose-Mindoro by the same scores. Their tournament ended with an 0-2 loss to Kickapoo.
Whitehall will sit at 3-4 for the rest of this week before opening Dairyland Conference play at Eau Claire Immanuel next Thursday.
