The Independence/Gilmanton boys basketball team got off to a fast start, but couldn’t keep up with the top team in the Dairyland Conference.
The Indees scored the first six points in the game, but it was mostly Cochrane-Fountain City from there. The Pirates surged to take the lead and took a 37-26 advantage into halftime before winning, 64-45. C-FC came into the game a perfect 18-0 in Dairyland Conference play and 20-2 overall.
The loss dropped I/G to 9-13 on the season, 6-12 in Dairyland Conference play behind Whitehall (8-10) and Osseo-Fairchild (16-2) in the DC-large. I/G played at Blair-Taylor on Monday of this week and will close out the regular season at home against Whitehall on Thursday.
I/G earned the 11th seed in its Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association bracket and plays at (6) Port Edwards next Tuesday. The winner of that game will play the winner of the contest between (3) Alma Center Lincoln and (14) Augusta.

Two quick baskets by Nolan Schank and another by Carlos Flores gave the Indees an early advantage, but the Pirates responded and took control.
C-FC took a 10-8 lead on a three-pointer then scored nine straight after the Indees tied the game at 12. C-FC led 37-22 at one point before the Indees scored four straight to pull within 11 at halftime.
The Indees came out of halftime strong as their run continued to 13-0 and a basket by Schank made the score 37-35. The Pirates answered with a 12-2 run to take a 12-point lead with about nine minutes left in the game.
I/G was within nine for much of the second half, but couldn’t get over the hump as the Pirates pulled away for the win.
Schank scored 15 to lead the Indees while both Flores and Payton Hovey finished with 12. Reed Schmidtknecht led all scorers with 21 for C-FC.
