Indee softball team loses three in DC play
The Independence/Gilmanton softball team struggled in three Dairyland Conference losses last week.
The Indees got off to OK starts, but quickly fell off in losses to Blair-Taylor on Tuesday (see story elsewhere in Sports) and Melrose-Mindoro on Thursday. On Friday, the Indees never got going, getting swept by Cochrane-Fountain City, 4-0 and 19-6. (No further information from the C-FC games was reported to the Times before press time).
The losses put I/G at 2-10 on the season before a Monday contest at Arcadia and Tuesday’s game at home against Augusta. The Indees are set to host Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran on Thursday and play at Eleva-Strum on Friday. This coming Monday they’ll play a doubleheader at Eau Claire Regis before finishing the regular season at home against Osseo-Fairchild next Tuesday.
Mel-Min 18 I/G 4
The Indees got off to a good start at the plate, but the Mustangs quickly took control.
Hannah Ekern began the game with a triple and scored on a single by Hadley Sylla, Danika Ekern added an RBI single later in the first to put I/G ahead, 2-0.
The lead wouldn’t last long, however.
The Mustangs stormed back with 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning. The team took advantage of four walks, a hit batter, and a single to take a 3-2 lead. The Mustangs had three more hits, two more walks and another hit batter as they took an 11-2 advantage into the second inning.
Catherine Kampa hit an RBI single for the Indees in the second, but they couldn’t keep up. Mel-Min got that run back in the bottom half of that inning then put up five in the third to go ahead 17-3.
I/G’s last run came on a solo home run by Hannah Ekern in the top of the fourth.
The Indees had seven hits in the game, two by Hannah Ekern and Hadley Sylla.
Katelyn Kampa got the start and took the loss before being replaced by Hannah Ekern in the first inning. The two pitchers combined to allow seven hits and 12 walks while striking out four.
