Wildcats clinch DC title with win over C-FC

The Blair-Taylor baseball team ended what was a tough week on a high note, clinching the Dairyland Conference Small Division title.

The week included a pair of non-conference losses to Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau and Arcadia (see stories elsewhere in Sports), but B-T pulled away from Cochrane-Fountain City late to clinch the DC-Small.

The win gave B-T a 9-3 record in conference play two games better than second-place Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran with just two contests remaining on the schedule.

This is the second straight conference championship for the Wildcats as the team tied with eventual Division Five state champion Eleva-Strum atop the conference last season. Though this is the first season the teams were split into Large and Small divisions since the DC began playing spring baseball in 2012.

B-T took 10-7-1 overall recorder into this week before playing at ECIL on Monday. B-T’s final scheduled regular season game will be this coming Tuesday at home against Pepin/Alma.

B-T 6 C-FC 2

It took a bit for the Wildcats to get going, but the team scored four runs in the final three innings, which proved to be the difference.

The teams were tied, 2-2, entering the fifth before Payton Kelly scored on a sacrifice fly to put B-T ahead. Tavian Shramek scored on a sacrifice in the sixth to add an insurance run before Kelly doubled, making the score 5-2.

Shramek scored again in the seventh, this time on a fielder’s choice.

B-T’s first run came in the top of the first when Shramek was hit by a pitch and scored on a single by Austin Thompson. C-FC responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Wildcats tied the game with a run on an error in the top of the second.

Brady Thompson went two-for-four at the plate and picked up the win on the mound. He tossed a complete game with three strikeouts while allowing seven hits and four walks. Neither of C-FC’s runs were earned.

Kelly also had two hits for B-T while Shramek scored three runs while going one-for-two at the plate.
