Post 191 splits thrillers with BRF, Fall Creek

The Whitehall American Legion baseball team certainly had an interesting week, splitting a pair of thrillers.

The team split a couple of one-run games that came down to the final at-bats. Last Tuesday, Whitehall was on the losing end, falling to Black River Falls, 10-9. On Wednesday, Grayson Pronschinske delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give his team a 12-11 victory.

Whitehall was scheduled to play at Elk Mound this Thursday.

BR Falls 10 Whitehall 9

Whitehall started fast, but Black River Falls scored five runs in the sixth inning to take control of the game.

Post 191 had an RBI single from Grayson Pronschinske and an RBI double by Jake Sartor as part of a five-run first inning, putting the team ahead, 5-1. Whitehall added another run in the second, which BRF matched in the fourth.

Whitehall started losing its grip on the game when BRF scored three runs in the fifth inning, to cut the lead to 6-5. Post 200 then put up five runs in the top of the sixth to take a four-run lead.

Post 191 rallied back as Will Youngbauer and Brett Schorbahn got hits early in the seventh before Sartor drove another run in. An error later in the inning helped more runs score as Whitehall pulled within one, but that’s as close as the team would get.

Youngbauer was three-for-four in the game while Pronschinske and Sartor both had two hits.

Riley Herman pitched the first five frames for Whitehall, striking out six while walking three and allowing five hits. Connor Stevens took the loss, pitching the final two innings, walking five batters and hitting two more while allowing one hit and striking out one.

The teams went back-and-forth all game before Fall Creek put up six runs in the sixth inning to take an 11-9 lead. Whitehall got one back in the bottom of the sixth and Schorbahn tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. With Broc Coburn 90 feet away, Pronschinske delivered the game-winning single.

Whitehall had 10 hits in the game as Herman, Sartor and Youngbauer all had two. Youngbauer drove in four runs, including a two-run double in the second and a two-run single in the fifth. Sartor also had two RBIs, while Schorbahn and Pronschisnke both drove in runs with their only hits in the game.

Youngbauer was the starting pitcher, tossing the first four innings before Sartor relieved him and Deacon Steig took the mound in the seventh. Steig pitched a scoreless inning and got the win.
