In their last chance to fine tune their play before the start of the postseason, the Arcadia Post 17 American Legion softball team showed few signs of rust in a doubleheader sweep of Westby late last week.

Arcadia (3-2) hadn’t taken the field for a game in nearly a month but had little trouble in taking care of business against Westby/Coon Valley at home this past Thursday.

Post 17 took part in a Division 2 regional in Durand early this week against both Boyceville and Durand to determine who would advance to this year’s state tournament.

After falling behind midway through the game, a strong final burst allowed Arcadia to come away with the victory in the first game of a doubleheader last Thursday.

Post 17 drew first blood in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs driven in on a Layna Wozney RBI groundout and a Kaitlyn Bremer RBI single. Westby/Coon Valley answered in the top of the third with four runs to jump ahead.

Tatum Drazkowski’s RBI single in the fourth and Chloe Schlosstein’s RBI double in the fifth knotted things up at 4-4. Arcadia delivered the knockout punch in the sixth inning with a six-run rally, with all half-dozen runs being scored with two outs.

Kiley Fitzpatrick’s two-run single gave Post 17 the lead and was soon followed by RBI singles courtesy of Schlosstein and Riley Walters.

Drazkowski helped set the pace by going 4 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Bremer and Fitzpatrick each finished 3 for 4 at the plate while Schlosstein and Walters collected two hits apiece.

Bremer also came on in relief in the pitching circle, tossing 4 1/3 scoreless innings while allowing only three hits to secure the win.

It turns out that the first run Arcadia scored was all they were going to need to sweep aside Westby in the second game of last week’s doubleheader.

Teagan Pientok was nearly untouchable in the circle for Post 17, allowing only one hit and one walk while striking out eight en route to a five-inning shutout.

A Kiley Fitpatrick sacrifice fly brought home Arcadia’s opening run in the bottom of the first, followed by two more runs manufactured in the second. A Kiva Helgeson-Sanchez RBI double in the third and Tatum Drazkowski’s exclamation point of a solo home run to center in the fourth wrapped up the scoring for Post 17.

Drazkowski and Chloe Schlosstein each had two hits to lead the way in the victory. In addition to the Drazkowski bomb, Schlosstein, Helgeson-Sanchez, Pientok and Amaya Schlesser each doubled for Arcadia.
