Wildcats trap Beavers to start DC play

While the passing game has been featured to start the season, the Blair-Taylor football team showed it can be balanced in its 56-6 win at Augusta last week.

Senior quarterback Kole Trapp was among the leading passers in the state entering last week’s game, but this week it was running back Collin Johnson who stole the show. The senior rushed for 182 yards on 11 carries and a pair of touchdowns in the win. The Wildcats ran for 287 yards in the game.

The win put B-T at 3-0 on the season and set up a big early-season clash against fellow undefeated Pepin/Alma at B-T this week. The Eagles and Wildcats were among three teams who tied for first in the DC last year.

Next week will be another big home game as the Wildcats are set to host undefeated Cochrane-Fountain City, the third team that tied for first last season. The Eagles and Pirates were considered preseason favorites to win the DC this year.

B-T 56 Augusta 6

The Wildcats got going right away as Johnson sprinted for a 66-yard touchdown on the team’s first offensive play.

The point after kick by Payton Kelly gave B-T a 7-0 lead with 10 minutes left in the first quarter. Johnson added a two-yard touchdown run a few minutes later to put his team ahead 13-0 with 6:35 left in the first.

After another B-T stop, CJ Dummer took a punt 50 yards back for a touchdown. The senior wide receiver then out-leaped two Augusta defenders to catch the two-point conversion and make the score 21-0 with about 4:30 left in the quarter.

B-T wasn’t done in the first as Trapp and Johnson connected on a screen pass for a 15-yard touchdown with nine seconds left in the quarter. Trapp ran in the two-point conversion to make the score 29-0.

The Wildcats slowed down in the second quarter and the Beavers scored to make it 29-6. Although Augusta scored with just 41 seconds left in the first half, that isn’t where the score stood at halftime.

Trapp scrambled around and hit Dummer in the back corner of the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown with four seconds left. The teams went into the intermission with B-T leading 35-6.

Connor Kruse added a 27-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Austin Clemens had two touchdown runs in the second half and Johnson added another as B-T broke the game wide open.

Trapp was six-for-13 with 58 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the game. In addition to Johnson’s big day, Clemens ran for 43 yards on four carries.
