Whitehall’s Frye, Arcadia’s Sobotta advance to state tourney

A pair of Trempealeau County girls wrestlers will make the journey to Madison this weekend to wrap up their seasons at the individual state tournament.

At a sectional meet in Stevens Point last Friday, Arcadia junior Kalyce Sobotta earned a state berth in the 120-pound bracket by going 3-1 on the evening and placing second. She pinned Adams-Friendship senior Riley Weaver and La Crosse Logan/Central junior Emylie Vang in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively.

After losing via pinfall to Princeton/Green Lake sophomore Daelin Cody in the first-place match, Sobotta rebounded by pinning Onalaska freshman Mya Foster in the second-place match to secure her state spot.

The Raiders also had juniors Madison Mahutga (107 pounds) and Elizabeth Bautista (185) competing at the sectional meet, but both were one and done after losing in the quarterfinals.

Whitehall sophomore Lucy Frye (235) will be joining Sobotta at the Kohl Center after also placing second in her weight class.

Frye quickly pinned New Lisbon sophomore Aubrey Bennett in the quarterfinals before losing by pinfall to Assumption/Pacelli junior Lexie Stoflet in the semifinals. Frye still managed to punch her state ticket by earning two pinfall victories in the first minute against Wisconsin Dells senior Kylie Burress in the third-place match and Stevens Point senior Alexis Wagner in the second-place bout.

Junior Ivonne Rojas Ortiz (100) narrowly missed out on making it to state by placing third. She went 2-1 but did not get a chance to wrestle in the second-place match because she would’ve been matched up with Marshfield sophomore Aubrey Engevold, who had already defeated her in the semifinals.

Blair-Taylor’s best result at Friday’s sectional came courtesy of freshman Jayda Ristey (107), who won her first two matches but then lost in both the first- and second-place bouts. Sophomores McKenzie Killian (114) and Maryjane Flynn (165) each lost their quarterfinal matches and were done for the day.

The 2026 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament is set to take place from Thursday through Sunday at the Kohl Center in Madison. Girls preliminary round matches get underway Thursday at 2 p.m., with quarterfinals following at approximately 4:30 p.m.
