Indees swept by Cardinals, fall to Thunder

The Independence/Gilmanton baseball team suffered two lopsided losses to a neighboring school and another to a different Dairyland Conference opponent last week.

The Indees began and ended the week with losses to Eleva-Strum, falling 12-2 on Monday and 19-1 on Friday. On Thursday, I/G lost to Osseo-Fairchild, 11-0.

The losses put I/G at 1-14 on the season before the team’s game against Augusta on Monday. The Indees will conclude the regular season in Whitehall on Thursday. 

Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament play begins next week, but the pairings had not been announced as of press time.

The Indees had an early lead, but the Cardinals dominated from there. 

Chase Back smashed a two-run home run in the bottom of the first to put I/G ahead 2-1, but that’s all the offense the Indees would manage.

The Cardinals took control with seven runs in the top of the fourth. They added four in the sixth, winning by the mercy rule in six innings.

Back had half of I/G’s four hits. 

Ricky Lopez took the loss on the mound, pitching three innings. Back pitched two innings and Preston Solberg threw one. The trio combined to allow 12 hits and six walks while striking out seven.

The Indees held the Thunder to just two hits, but six errors, six walks, and four hit-batters helped bring home 11 runs. 

The Thunder took the lead with two runs in the first. They added another in the second then broke the game open with eight in the third. The game ended by the mercy rule after five innings. 

I/G had only one hit, a single by Jose Cantu Lucio. 

Blake Slaby got the start and the loss, tossing 2.1 innings before being relieved by Preston Solberg. They combined for five strikeouts.

The Cardinals took a big lead early and the Indees never recovered.

E-S scored eight runs in the first inning, then added five more in the second. I/G scored one, on a groundout by Back, in the third, but that’s all they could manage. The Cardinals answered with five in the bottom of the third and one more in the fourth.

Back had I/G’s only hit in the game. He also took the loss on the mound, pitching two-thirds of an inning, allowing four hits and four walks. Ricky Lopez pitched the rest of the game, allowing 10 hits and one walk while striking out one. 

I/G committed eight errors defensively, leading to seven unearned runs.
