Duane R. Hertzfeldt

Duane Roland Hertzfeldt, 83, of Ettrick, and formerly North Bend, passed away peacefully at his home, March 26, 2020. He was born April 19, 1936, the son of Clarence and Marie (Kurth) Hertzfeldt.

Duane served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 – 1959. On October 10, 1959, he married the love of his life, Gloria (Wulff), in a candlelight ceremony in Mondovi. Together they have five children: Dwayne Jr. (Rebecca), Mary (Rick) Thompson, Sally (Brian) Jones, Gary (Laurie) and Kelly (Tim) Beirne.

After his service in the Navy, he worked at American Motors in Kenosha, but his true calling was farming. Duane and Gloria relocated to the North Bend area in 1961, where they bought a farm and raised their family. Duane was proud of the growth of the family farm and being able to work alongside his wife and children. He enjoyed many gatherings on the farm with family and friends. Because of health reasons, he was unable to farm the last couple of years. In November, Duane and Gloria moved from the farm they lived on for 60 years to Ettrick, but were comforted knowing the farming tradition will carry on through their son and grandson.

When he wasn’t on a tractor, Duane enjoyed occasional trips to the casino to play blackjack, attending his grandchildren’s activities and watching the Packers and Badgers.

He is survived by his grandchildren: Lanna (Bob) Goodwin, Greg (Kristi) Hertzfeldt, Courtney Hertzfeldt (Travis Kirchner), Valerie (Eric) Erickson, Jason Thompson, Miranda Jones (Austin Smart), Nathan (Abby) Simonson, LeeAnn and Kyle Hertzfeldt, Sara and Grant Beirne; great-grandchildren: Anna, Karalyn, Bobby, Braxton, Ryan, Katie, Jackson, Ellie, Cartyr, Cayda and Coy.

Surviving brothers are Larry (Bobbie) and David (Pat) Hertzfeldt; surviving sisters are Marie (Allen) Baronsky, Darlene Marzini, Sharon Hertzfeldt; sisters-in-law: Catherine Hertzfeldt, Nancy Knutson. Arlene Wulff, June Wulff; a brother-in-law, Dennis Wulff; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Joyce Stevens; three brothers: Clarence Jr., Donald, Gerald “Tim”; brothers-in-law: Richard, John and David Wulff, Bob Knutson; his father-in-law, Oliver Wulff; and mother-in-law, Lylah Wulff.

Private family services will be held. A Celebration of Life, for family and friends, will be announced in the future. Zwickey Funeral Homes, Galesville Chapel, is assisting the family. The family requests memorials be given to your local fire department, first responders, South Beaver Creek Lutheran Church or organization of your choice.

A limb has fallen from the family tree. I keep hearing a voice that says, “Grieve not for me.” Remember the best times, the laughter, the song, the good life I lived while I was strong. Continue my heritage, I’m counting on you. Keep smiling and surely the sun will shine through. My mind is at ease, my soul is at rest. Remembering all, how I truly was blessed. Continue traditions, no matter how small. Go on with your life, don’t worry about falls. I miss you all dearly, so keep up your chin. Until the day comes, we’re together again.
