Sherman S. Severson

Sherman S. Severson, 89, formerly of rural Arcadia, died peacefully, surrounded by family, Saturday, June 27, 2026, at the VA Hospital in Tomah.

Sherman was born April 24, 1937, in Dover Township, rural Mondovi, to Lee and Goldie (Bidney) Severson. In 1960, Sherman enlisted into the U.S. Army, serving dutifully until 1963. He was united in marriage on May 1, 1971, to Barbara Moen at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Whitehall. Together, the couple lived in rural Arcadia and were blessed with five children. Sherman was a skilled carpenter and was always working with his hands. He could fix just about everything from small engines to faucets, and he took pride in his craftsmanship. In his spare time, Sherman enjoyed trout fishing, hunting for collectibles at thrift sales and tending to his vegetable garden. He was especially proud of his Norwegian heritage and his time serving in the military. In 2010, Sherman and Barbara were able to take a three week long trip to Germany to visit a friend Sherman met while in the Army, a trip that was a highlight of his life. His hard work ethic, dedication to his trade, generosity and devotion to his family will be treasured in the hearts of his loved ones.

Sherman is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara of Independence; sons: Shawn of Portugal, Brent of Stoughton, Robin (Nina) of Baraboo, and Skipp of Ridgeland; daughter, Goldie (Sean) Nelson of DeForest; grandsons: Alexander, Landon, and Russell Nelson all of DeForest; sister-in-law, Carol (Bob) Solberg of Neillsville; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.

A funeral service for Sherman will be held Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., at Kjentvet-Smith Funeral Home in Mondovi with Pastor Luke Pederson officiating. Family and friends are welcome for visitation beginning at noon until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be in the Severson Family Cemetery, rural Bennett Valley. A celebration of Sherman’s Life will follow the burial at the Gilmanton American Legion Hall.
