Arcadia baseball opens playoffs with regional win

A regional win over Tomah got the playoffs rolling for the Arcadia High School baseball team last Tuesday.

The fifth-seeded Raiders (13-8 this season) took care of business against the 12th-seeded Timberwolves behind a productive fifth inning.

Arcadia also ended its regular season last week with a loss to Mondovi on Monday. The Raiders were scheduled to play at fourth-seeded Abbotsford/Colby (18-5) in the next round of the regional bracket this Tuesday.

Mondovi scored at least two runs in each of the first three innings last Monday to prevent a comeback effort from Arcadia on its home field.

The Raiders were out-hit 13-6 by the visitors.

Connor Weltzien paced Arcadia with a pair of hits, including a home run. Four pitchers split time on the mound, striking out three visitor batters and walking six others.

Five runs in the bottom of the third inning gave the hosts all the cushion they would need to beat Tomah (5-16).

Offense was a strength for the Raiders on a day they collected 10 hits, led by three from Vince Braun.

Cam Boland and Carson Martin each added two more, and Weltzien hit a triple.

Weltzien started on the mound for Arcadia as well, striking out nine Timberwolves and allowing four hits and no earned runs.
