Arcadia, G-E-T tune up for WIAA golf tournament with two invites
Both the Arcadia and Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School golf teams played in a pair of invitational meets last week as they prepared for tournament play to start this week.
The Raiders and Red Hawks were both set to open the postseason with regional play on Tuesday at Skyline Golf Course in Black River Falls.
Last week started with an 18-hole tournament at Skyline on Wednesday before the Coulee Conference foes squared off again the next day in Holmen.
Skyline Invitational
Arcadia placed third and the Red Hawks took fifth in the first of the back to back meets last Wednesday.
The 10-team event was led by the other team in the top three cluster of the Coulee Conference, as Black River Falls won their home meet with a 324. Cochrane-Fountain City (344) edged Arcadia and Durand by two strokes to place second, followed by G-E-T at 351.
Both Arcadia (Cole Sobotta, fourth, 77) and G-E-T (Caleb Lightfoot, T-sixth, 81) cracked the top 10 at the par-72 course.
The Raiders had two other golfers under the 90-stroke mark, as Joey Theis and Sid Halvorsen tied for 12th at 89.
Christopher Wagner was among the other four golfers at 89 to card G-E-T’s second best score of the day. Teammates Boden Bratberg (90), Lance Jumbeck (90) and Ethan Burmeister (105) also played.
Arcadia also featured rounds from Dustin Klonecki at 91 and Connor Lisowski at 96.
Osseo-Fairchild took sixth as a team with a 360, Colfax/Elm Mound scored a 371, and Altoona (386), Whitehall (388) and Westby (404) rounded out the team scores.
Whitehall’s top score came from Gus Poulos, whose 91 tied him with Jumbeck and Klonecki for 21st. Keanu Estenson shot a 94, and Whitehall also got scores of 97 from Adam Kleinhans and 106 from Drake Jurowski. Kadien Gaier rounded out the event scores at 119.
Holmen Invitational
Sobotta stayed near the top of the leader board in Thursday’s invitational at Drugan’s Castle Mound in Holmen.
The Arcadia junior shot a 4-over-par 39 to take eighth, highlighted by a birdie on the 290-yard par-4 third hole. Onalaska senior Ethan Kramer took the top spot with a 2-under-par 33.
Arcadia closed out the top five with 169 team points, behind top teams Onalaska and Holmen. They were barely edged by Tomah (167) and Aquinas (168).
The Raiders beat out Sparta in sixth with 182 points, Holmen, La Crosse Central, Luther, Winona/Cotter, West Salem and G-E-T.
The Red Hawks played a younger lineup on Thursday, and sophomores Mason Kromrey and Domanick Knott tied with freshman Nic Jumper for the team’s low score at 59. Sophomore Mason Hale shot a 56.
Klonecki was tied for 15th with a 42, just ahead of Halvorsen at 43. Theis shot a 45 for Arcadia, and Pronschinske added a 59.
