Arcadia not likely to field girls golf team in 2023

The defending Coulee Conference champion in girls golf will likely not field a team in 2023.

Arcadia/Independence has not seen any interest from students in playing girls golf this fall in either school district, and longtime coach Mike Sobotta is retiring from coaching after decades in the job.

The team had four seniors on its 2022 team that won the Coulee Conference title.

“We kind of anticipated we were going to be in a spot where we may not have any players this year because we did not have any underclassmen at all last year,” Superintendent and co-athletic director Lance Bagstad said.

Arcadia does not currently offer a girls’ middle school golf program.

Should a girl decide in the coming weeks that they want to play golf this fall, the school will still work to offer the sport, Bagstad said.

“If we have students that all of a sudden show a late interest,” Bagstad said, “we would certainly do everything we can to secure a coach and run the program somehow.”

Those that would be interested in coaching a potential girls program can contact the district office.
