Arcadia wins delayed legion softball opener
After weeks of cancellations due to unfavorable weather, the Arcadia Post 17 Legion softball team was finally able to take to the diamond to play their first game of the summer, where they won in dominating fashion.
Post 17 turned a decisive advantage into a full-on blowout with a nine-run fifth-inning rally in their 17-1 victory over La Crosse Central last Wednesday in La Crosse.
Arcadia posted three runs in each of the first two innings, including a Madison Grotjahn RBI triple and a Tatum Drazkowski RBI single in the top of the first.
Already leading 8-1, Post 17 put the scoring into overdrive and helped bring about the mercy rule with their nine runs in the top of the fifth. That massive rally included RBI doubles by Teagan Pientok and Presley Wegman, along with RBI singles courtesy of Lily Dickman, Drazkowski and Layna Wozney.
Drazkowski helped set the tone at the plate by going 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs while Riley Walters finished 2 for 3 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored.
In the pitching circle, Wozney picked up the win by striking out 10 and allowing one run in four innings. Pientok completed the game with a 1-2-3 fifth inning in relief.
After playing at West Salem on the Wednesday before Fourth of July weekend, Arcadia returns to action to face Viroqua on the road next Wednesday at 5 p.m.
