G-E-T football wins again, playoffs within reach
The Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School football team’s defense did not score a touchdown in last Friday’s Coulee Conference game at Altoona High School, but it was an early play by the Red Hawk defenders that set the Red Hawks up for its third win in four games.
Friday was a continuation of a recent surge in play that has the Red Hawks one win away from the postseason.
Domanick Knott had just kicked a 21-yard field goal to make it 3-0 G-E-T last Friday when cornerback Riley Hammel recovered a fumble on Altoona’s second play on offense. Two plays later the Red Hawks were celebrating a 26-yard touchdown scamper from Kyle Seiling and a 10-0 lead.
Friday’s 27-14 win puts G-E-T, now 3-4 overall and 3-2 in conference action, in position to qualify for the postseason for the second straight year—The Red Hawks now need either a win against Westby (6-1, 4-1 Coulee) this week or against county foe Arcadia (2-5, 0-5 Coulee) next week to clinch a spot in the playoffs.
Altoona (3-4 overall, 2-3 Coulee) took the lead back from the Red Hawks with back-to-back touchdowns in the first half before Seiling again took over for the visitors.
Altoona gave themselves a 14-10 advantage with a one-yard rushing score in the second quarter, but Seiling returned the ensuing kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown to take back the lead, 17-14.
Seiling, a junior, scored his third touchdown of the night on a four-yard run in the third quarter, and Knott kicked another field goal in the fourth quarter to seal the game.
Seiling (seven) is now tied with Aquinas’ Kyle White for the second-most rushing touchdowns in the Coulee this fall behind only Westby’s Rhett Stenslien (eight). Stenslien and the Norsemen are next on the Red Hawks’ schedule with a 7 p.m. game this Friday at Westby High School.
The Red Hawks ran for 232 yards as a team as they continue to push a run-heavy offense this fall. Seiling contributed 150 of those yards on 21 carries to lead G-E-T.
Jackson Burns was one of the Red Hawks’ busiest players on defense, recording six solo tackles and the visitors’ lone interception on Altoona quarterback Trent Cornell. Teammates Cisco Jimenez and Kolby Lewis each hit the seven-tackle threshold for G-E-T.
