Indee softball team wins two of five

The Independence/Gilmanton softball team got off to a strong start, but ended up having an uneven week.

The Indees opened the week with a 13-7 win over Eleva-Strum on Monday before splitting a doubleheader against Alma Center Lincoln on Tuesday and losing to Melrose-Mindoro and Pepin/Alma on Thursday and Friday.

The Indees began this week with a 4-7 record before they played at Augusta on Tuesday. They’re set to take on the Dairyland Conference’s top team, Blair-Taylor, at home on Friday before playing two other top teams, Mel-Min and Cochrane-Fountain City next Monday and Tuesday.

I/G 13 Eleva-Strum 7

The Indees trailed for much of the game, but an eight-run fourth put them in control.

The Cardinals scored two runs in the second inning and held a lead until the fourth when Makiyah Scow singled in two runs that put the Indees ahead 3-2. Leah Sylla and Rhianna Thesen both added RBIs in the inning as the Indees took an 8-2 lead.

The Cardinals scored two runs in the fifth and then charged back with three in the sixth to pull within one, but the Indees didn’t let them get any closer.

I/G put up five runs in the bottom of the sixth as Adison Pronschinske, Maggie Woychik and Kylynn Kennedy had RBI hits to put the Indees ahead by the final.

I/G had 12 hits in the game as Theisen and Kennedy both had three while Woychik added two. 

Sylla was the winning pitcher with four strikeouts, while allowing six walks and three hits. 

AC Lincoln 2 I/G 1

The Indees couldn’t get their offense going in the loss.

All of the runs scored in the game came in the first inning. The Hornets had four hits in the top of the first, bringing home two runs. Theisen singled in I/G’s only run in the bottom half of the inning.

The Indees had chances with two runners on in the second and the bases loaded with no outs in the third, but they weren’t able to score again in the five-inning game.

Thesien had two of I/G’s four hits in the game.

Sylla took the loss, striking out five with one walk. The Hornets had seven hits in the contest. 

I/G 8 AC Lincoln 0

The Indees took the lead in the second inning and didn’t let the Hornets get on the board.

An RBI single by Scow put I/G ahead 1-0. They added another run in the third inning and two in the fourth as a double by Sylla made the score 4-0. The Indees pulled away with four more runs in the top of the fifth.

Theisen led the Indees with two hits as they managed seven as a team. 

Sylla allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out three as she earned the win. 

Mel-Min 12 I/G 0

The Mustangs came out swinging and the Indees couldn’t stop them.

Two Mel-Min hits and two I/G errors helped the Mustangs take a 4-0 lead in the first inning. They added eight hits and seven runs in the fourth and another run on three hits in the fifth.

The Mustangs finished with 15 hits in the five-inning game and were helped by four I/G errors. Sylla took the loss for I/G pitching a complete game with one walk and zero strikeouts.

Three different players had one hit for I/G.

The Eagles took an early lead then added insurance runs late.

P/A scored three runs without a hit in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of three walks, a hit batter and an error. The Indees came up with two on a single by Woychik to pull within a run, but they couldn’t score again the rest of the game. I/G only had three baserunners in the final six innings.

The Eagles added a run on three hits in the fifth then scored another with two hits in the sixth to go ahead by the final score.

Sylla took the loss, allowing six hits and four walks while striking out four. Only two of the five runs were earned as the Indees committed three errors in the game.
