Indees fall to Beavers, Wildcats

It was one close loss for the Independence/Gilmanton softball team and one that wasn’t close last week.

The Indees had an early lead against Augusta last week Tuesday, but the Beavers scored four unanswered runs to win, 4-3. On Friday, the Indees got a home run in the bottom of the first inning, but that’s all they managed — and they struggled to stop Blair-Taylor from scoring — in a 22-1 loss (see story elsewhere in Sports).

The Indees began this week with a 4-8 record before playing at Melrose-Mindoro on Monday and at Cochrane-Fountain City on Tuesday. They’re set to host Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran on Thursday and play at Pepin/Alma on Saturday. This coming Monday, they’ll host Whitehall before playing at Eleva-Strum on Tuesday.

Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association play is set to begin next Thursday. 

Augusta 4 I/G 3

The Indees got off to a fast start, but their offense was quiet in the final six innings.

A two-run home run by Maggie Woychik put I/G ahead in the top of the first inning then Kylynn Kennedy hit an RBI single to make the score 3-0. But the Indees wouldn’t score the rest of the game.

The Beavers got one run back in the bottom of the first, then took the lead in the third. An RBI double brought Augusta within one before an error scored two runs that put the Beavers ahead.

I/G had chances to regain control. They had two on with one out in the fourth before consecutive strikeouts ended the threat. They had the tying run on third in the sixth, but a ground out ended the inning. Rhianna Theisen led off the seventh with a single, but was followed by two strikeouts and a ground out to end the game. 

Seven different I/G players had one hit. They struggled to put the ball in play, striking out 12 times, while managing three walks. 

Leah Sylla took the loss, allowing eight hits and two walks while striking out four.
