Indees fall to defending state champions

The Independence/Gilmanton boys basketball team had a tough time from the start on the road against the defending Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division Five State Champions.

Cochrane-Fountain City graduated some key players from last year’s squad, but still return an experienced and athletic bunch. They held the Indees to just 14 percent shooting from the field and eight points in each half of their 63-16 win last Thursday.

The loss dropped I/G to 0-2 on the season before Tuesday’s home game against Whitehall. The Indees are set to play at Alma Center Lincoln on Friday before a couple of home games next week, against Eleva-Strum on Tuesday and Alma/Pepin on Friday.

The defending state champions protected their home court, taking a big lead early as the Indees never really got going.

I/G had a 3-2 advantage after the first few possessions, but would manage just five points in the final 17 minutes of the first half as C-FC took a 37-8 lead into the intermission.

The Indees played the Pirates evenly for the first handful of possessions in the second half as a three by Glen Turner Jr and basket by Nolan Schank made the score 41-13 with 17 minutes left in the game. The Indees would manage just three more points the rest of the way, however.
