Indees split with Mustangs, Eagles

The Independence/Gilmanton volleyball team closed its regular season with a five-set win.

The Indees lost to Melrose-Mindoro, 3-1, earlier in the week and were in trouble at home against Pepin/Alma on Thursday. After a 25-17 win in the first set, the Indees lost the second and third. The team rallied to take the fourth, 26-24 before winning the match with a 15-11 victory in the fifth set. No individual statistics from that match were available as of press time.

I/G finished the regular season with a record of 7-11 overall and 4-6 in Dairyland Conference play. The team began Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament play on the road on Tuesday. The ninth-seeded Indees played at (8) Pittsville with the winner heading to (1) Cochrane-Fountain City on Thursday. The regional final is set for Saturday.

The Mustangs came through at the end to win three close sets.

Mel-Min’s four-point win in the first set was the largest victory of the night. The Indees tied the match, but the Mustangs won the next two for the 3-1 win.

Nora Schank and Shauna Dejno both had nine kills for I/G while Hannah Ekern and Hailey Gruber had eight, and both Hadley Sylla and Celia Slaby had five. Dejno also had two blocks. Hannah Ekern had 31 set assists for the team.

Slaby led the Indees with three aces while Danika Ekern and Sylla both had two and Hannah Ekern added one. 

Danika Ekern led the team with 25 digs, Hannah Ekern added 20 and Sylla finished with 18.
