Indees top Hornets, fall to Eagles

The Independence/Gilmanton baseball team rebounded from a slow start for one win, but never really got going in a loss last week.

The Indees fell behind Alma Center Lincoln, 2-0, on Tuesday, but rallied back for a 7-2 win. On Thursday, I/G and Pepin/Alma were scoreless until the Eagles broke through with a run in the fifth and held on for the 1-0 win. No further information from that game was provided before the Times went to press.

At 4-4, the Indees were slated to play at Eau Claire Regis on Monday and Arcadia on Tuesday before heading to Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran on Friday and Blair-Taylor this coming Tuesday.

After falling behind early, the Indees scored seven unanswered runs.

The Hornets scored two on four hits — including two doubles — in the bottom of the first inning, but that’s all they would manage.

The Indees took the lead with a three-run third inning. Eric Lopez got the scoring started with an RBI single and later put the team ahead by stealing home.

Chase Back and Preston Solberg had RBI singles in the fifth and another run scored on a fielder’s choice as the team took a 6-2 lead. Back scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to put I/G ahead by the final.

Eric Lopez, Back, Ricky Lopez and Solberg all had two hits in the game as the Indees managed 12 total.

Hovey pitched the first three innings, allowing six hits while striking out five without a walk. Back finished the game, striking out four while walking five and allowing three hits.
