Norse can’t keep up with DC’s top grid team in final game

Alma/Pepin was as advertised as the Dairyland Conference champion and one of the top-ranked Division Seven teams in the state put up 38 points before halftime in Whitehall last week.

The Eagles were balanced as they move down the field and completed an undefeated regular season with a 38-0 win over the Norse.

Whitehall finished its season with a 2-7 record, 2-5 in Dairyland Conference play. The game was played on Senior Night for Whitehall as the team honored its only senior, Brock Sluga. 

The team expects to have more to celebrate next year as the 12 juniors from this year’s team will be seniors. They’ll combine with the four sophomores from this year’s class and nine freshman — including several who played this year.

The Norse had a couple of chances to stop the Eagles on the first drive, but the DC champion converted and scored.

Whitehall had some success on early downs with tackles at or behind the line of scrimmage, forcing long yardage situations on A/P’s first drive, but the Eagles converted. They ended the drive with a one-yard touchdown by Demetrius Bergmann, who also ran in the two-point conversion.

Whitehall’s first offensive possession ended when the team didn’t convert a fourth down with five yards to go at the team’s 40. Quarterback Mason Pientok was tackled in the backfield, giving the Eagles the ball inside Whitehall’s 40.

A/P quarterback Madox Stewart passed to Evan Olson for a 30-yard gain then Bergmann finished the drive with a five-yard touchdown run. Jackson Riesgraf ran in the two-point conversion and the Eagles were ahead 16-0.

Stewart and Olson hooked up for a four-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Bergmann’s two-pointer made the score 24-0.

Bergman scored his third touchdown of the night later in the half, another one-yard plunge. Stewart passed for the two-point conversion that made the score 32-0.

Stewart and Olson connected for their second touchdown late in the first half. The two-point try was no good, but the Eagles took a 38-0 lead into halftime.

With a running clock in rainy conditions, A/P called off the dogs in the second half. 

Whitehall’s first drive of the second frame went deep into A/P territory, but they turned the ball over on downs. 

Bergmann had 91 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries. Riesgraf added 63 yards on seven rushes as A/P finished with 209 yards on 31 attempts in the game.

Stewart passed eight-for-15 with 140 yards and two touchdowns. All eight completions were to Olson.

Bo Killian led Whitehall with 30 rushing yards. The team did not attempt a pass in the game.
