Post 17 gets first win

After struggling to start the season, the Arcadia Tickfer-Erickson American Legion Post 17 baseball team picked up its first win last week Monday.

Arcadia’s 0-4 start included two losses by 10 runs or more as they gave up at least six runs in each game. But last week, Post 17 limited Tomah to just three hits as they came away with a 10-1 win. The team struggled again last Wednesday, however, falling to the legion team from Osseo-Fairchild 16-5 to fall to 1-5 on the season.

Post 17 was scheduled to play at Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau on Tuesday of this week before heading to La Crosse North Stars on Thursday. They’ll play at home next week with games against Gays Mills on Monday and Whitehall on Thursday before they go to West Salem on Friday.

Post 17 took control with four runs in the second inning.

The first run came home when Logan Aspenson singled and scored on an error. Abe Henderson added an RBI single before Ted Teske scored on a groundout hit by Connor Weltzien. Carson Martin singled home Henderson and Arcadia was in control with a 4-0 advantage.

Arcadia added three more runs in the fourth as Teske scored on a wild pitch and Henderson a groundout to make the score 6-0 before Weltzien came home on a sacrifice fly by Vince Braun.

Tomah took advantage of four walks to score one run in the bottom of the fifth, but Arcadia got that back plus two more in the top of the sixth.

After an error and a hit batter, Martin singled Henderson home. Aspenson hit into a fielder’s choice that Weltzien scored on before Martin came home on a wild pitch, making the score 10-1.

Martin had two of Arcadia’s five hits, but the team also drew six walks, while striking out 12 times.

Weltzien got the start and the win, allowing two hits while striking out four in three innings. Martin pitched the next two innings before Henderson tossed the last two.

O-F 16 Arcadia 5

It was a tough start for Post 17 at the team from O-F scored nine runs combined in the first two innings.

A two-run double put the O-F team ahead before two straight singles capped a four-run inning in which the team had six hits and drew two walks.

It looked like the game might be a shootout when Braun doubled with the bases loaded to bring three runs home, but Arcadia couldn’t keep up. O-F added four runs in the second inning then six in the fourth to take a 15-3 lead.

Braun hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, but O-F got that run back in the top of the fifth. A sacrifice fly by Prestin Scow brought one more run home for Arcadia in the bottom of the fifth, but they couldn’t extend the game, losing by the mercy rule in five innings.

Arcadia had eight hits as each of the first four batters in the lineup — Henderson, Weltzien, Martin and Braun — had two. Braun had four RBIs. The team also earned eight walks, but couldn’t get key hits from the bottom of the order. 

Braun took the loss on the mound, allowing 18 hits and walking 11 batters while striking out five. 

Spencer Ossmenson led O-F at the plate, going four-for-four with three RBIs.
