Post 17 softball earns split against La Crescent
Following back-to-back weeks of having games canceled due to weather — which already followed a delayed start to their summer schedule due to an uncooperative Mother Nature — the Arcadia Legion softball team finally was able to take the field for only the second time this season.
Post 17 earned a doubleheader split against La Crescent Post 595 last Wednesday in Arcadia, giving themselves a chance to knock off some rust ahead of the postseason.
Arcadia is competing against West Salem, Sparta and Tomah at a Division 1 regional this week in West Salem. Play got underway on Tuesday and wraps up Wednesday, with the top two teams advancing to the state tournament in Merrill.
La Crescent 7 Arcadia 6
Post 17 nearly erased a six-run deficit but came up just short in their comeback bid in the first game of last week’s doubleheader with Post 595.
La Crescent bolted out to a 6-0 lead early before Arcadia tallied their first run on Teagan Pientok’s RBI groundout in the bottom of the second.
After Post 595 added an additional run in the top of the fourth, Arcadia sliced the deficit to only one thanks to a five-run rally in the bottom half of that same inning, which included RBI doubles courtesy of Layla Blaschko and Lily Dickman. However, they could not plate the tying run in either the fourth or fifth.
Presley Wegman finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored for Arcadia.
Arcadia 17 La Crescent 7
Post 17 unleased a scoring avalanche on La Crescent in the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader, scoring 17 runs to secure a win in just three innings.
Both teams ripped off seven-run rallies in the first inning. While Arcadia continued to pour on the runs with seven more in the second and three final runs in the third, Post 595 was held in check by Pientok, who entered the game to clean up a first-inning mess and wound up tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings.
Pientok also helped lead the charge at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a double, four RBIs and three runs. Additionally for Post 17, Amaya Schlesser finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored while Riley Walters went 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs.
