Raiders rack up miles, boys show potential to open cross country season
If the first week of competition is a hint of what this fall could bring, the Arcadia High School boys cross country team is due for plenty of top finishes.
Arcadia opened its schedule by winning a two-mile invitational at Wabasha-Kellogg High School last Monday, and the Raider boys followed the win by taking 18th at a competition against some of the best teams in the state in Verona on Saturday. The Raider girls took sixth on Monday.
Both teams will continue the season this week with Arcadia scheduled to run at the G-E-T Invitational meet slated for Thursday at Ettrick Golf Course.
Raider boys start fast
Six different Arcadia runners finished in the top 17 times last Monday to power the Raider boys to a top team finish.
Nestor Badillo led the Raiders with his second-place run, finishing the two-mile race in 10 minutes, 48.7 seconds. Other Raiders in the top 10 included Cole Lockington (fourth), Andy Monroy (sixth) and Peyton Nelson (ninth). Ivan Aguilar took 13th for Arcadia, while Matthew Badillo finished 17th.
Cole Arens of host Wabasha-Kellogg ran the fastest time, earning medalist honors in 10:03.3.
Arcadia’s girls team finished sixth at the event, led by Linsy Cruz’s 35th place run. Katie Amundsen took 37th, and the Raiders rounded out their score after Edith Gonzalez finished 41st and teammates Nayeli Reyes (47th) and Rae Schaffner (50th) also ran.

Verona meet showcases talent
Some of Wisconsin’s fastest runners were present at Saturday’s invitational meet in Verona, and the times reflected the talent in a field that saw nearly 400 total runners and more than 30 teams.
Nico Castellanos of Madison La Follette took first in 15:56 during the boys 5k race.
Arcadia finished 18th as a team in the boys’ competition and were again led by Nestor Badillo—Badillo ran the race in 17:43.5, good for 44th place.
Monroy also took a top-50 spot for the Raiders, taking 46th. Peyton Nelson (68th), Cole Lockington (113th) and Matthew Badillo (169th) also scored points for Arcadia.
Madison West took the top team spot with 104 points, followed by Middleton in second (157), Verona in third (166) and a team Arcadia knows well in West Salem (178) in fourth.
Madison West completed the event sweep by also taking the girls’ crown on Saturday, led by four runners inside the top 11.
Arcadia did not have any girls compete in the event.
