Red Hawks clobber Norsemen for first win

After three cracks at picking up their inaugural win under first-year head coach Dan Henken, the fourth time proved to be the charm for the G-E-T football team.

The Red Hawks (1-3, 1-1 Coulee) went on the road and earned that highly coveted victory by battering the Westby Norsemen (1-3, 0-2) 48-14 this past Friday in Westby.

G-E-T drew first blood late in the first quarter, when senior Brode Eiken took a short pass from sophomore Brady Hansen and rumbled free for a 34-yard touchdown. The Red Hawks eventually led 21-7 at the halftime intermission after getting a 59-yard rushing touchdown by senior Isaiah Carroll and a five-yard TD run on a keeper by Hansen in the second quarter.

There was no letting off the gas by G-E-T in the second half, where they outscored Westby 27-7 and eventually brought the running clock into play in the fourth quarter.

Not even a minute into the third quarter, Hansen found junior Chase Repaal deep for a 30-yard touchdown strike. After forcing a Westby turnover on downs, Carroll ran for 28 yards on the first play of the ensuing drive and then caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Hansen on the following play.

The final two G-E-T touchdowns came in the fourth quarter on a couple of lengthy runs: a 52-yard TD scamper by senior Wyatt Nichols and a 58-yard run by freshman Briven Daffinson.

The Red Hawk rushing attack was highly efficient in Friday’s win, putting up 299 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 11.5 yards per carry. That effort was led by Carroll with 103 yards on four rushes and Hansen with 81 yards on 10 attempts.

Additionally, Hansen completed 5 of 8 passes for 80 yards and a trio of touchdowns. Defensively, senior Lucas Herman and Braden Peterson each reeled in an interception for G-E-T.

For their homecoming game next Friday, the Red Hawks welcome in the Aquinas Blugolds (1-3, 1-1) for a conference clash starting at 7 p.m.
