Red Hawks pick up back-to-back wins over Tomah, Viroqua

Coming off a loss to Onalaska Luther to wrap up their January slate, the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau boys basketball team was seeking to get back on track to kick off the new month. They did just that with back-to-back wins.

The Red Hawks (10-8, 5-3 Coulee) earned a non-conference victory at home by turning aside Tomah and then got back on a winning track in Coulee play by going on the road and defeating Viroqua.

G-E-T, who has now won six of its last seven games, begins a stretch of four straight home games by hosting Black River Falls in league action on Thursday and then welcoming in Cochrane-Fountain City for a non-conference tilt on Monday. Both games are scheduled to start around 7 p.m.

G-E-T 59 Tomah 47

The Red Hawks leveled their non-conference record this season at 5-5 by taking care of the Timberwolves (6-12) for a 12-point win last Tuesday in Galesville.

The game was tight throughout much of the proceedings — including a 20-20 tie at halftime — but G-E-T made its move late in the second half. Leading just 41-40 with a little over five minutes to play, the Red Hawks surged ahead over the next few minutes with an 18-3 run that put the game away.

Jackson Burns went off for a career-high 27 points and Mason Brone contributed 16 points for G-E-T in the victory. Tomah’s Quinn Gerke and Brennen Worden scored 16 and 11 points, respectively.

G-E-T 54 Viroqua 46

The Red Hawks completed a season sweep of the Blackhawks (5-12, 1-8 Coulee) by going on the road and securing an eight-point victory last Friday in Viroqua.

G-E-T used a 15-5 run in the first half to jump ahead 20-11 and rode that wave to a 27-17 halftime advantage. The Red Hawks were in command throughout the entirety of the second half, leading by as much as 18 and never allowing Viroqua to get closer than a six-point deficit in the final minutes.

Brone led all scorers with 20 points, Brecken Ebersold tacked on nine points and the duo of Luke Herman and Quinn O’Neill each nabbed seven rebounds in the win. Leading scorers for the Blackhawks were Matthew Weston with 13 points, Kolten Peterson with 11 and Benson McDowell with 10.
