Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau’s Sawyer Smock has lofty expectations for his senior season — one that he hopes eventually leads to a spot on the podium in La Crosse at the state track meet.
While that’s the ultimate end goal, he still has other goals he’d love to hit along the way. Smock knocked out a big one by breaking the school record in the boys pole vault last week.
Smock set a new G-E-T record by clearing the bar at 14 feet, 3 inches to win the pole vault at the Logan Invitational last Tuesday in La Crosse.
“Yesterday, I snapped a pole in practice. So, we didn’t know how today was going to go,” Smock said. “I had the support of all my teammates. They were all here watching, the ones that weren’t running. It felt great that I had a community watching.
Fellow G-E-T senior Brayden Lawson also gave the team a first-place finish in the long jump. Nathanael Sorenson took third in the 400-meter dash.
On the boys’ side for Arcadia, Ted Teske placed first in both the 400-meter dash and the high jump, while Andy Monroy and Jerson Sanchez won the 3,200-meter run and the 110-meter hurdles, respectively.
The Raiders’ second-place finishers included Alec Conrad in the 800-meter run, David Escalara in the 300-meter hurdles and Trey Lyga in the discus throw.
Junior Jaylie Dahl set the pace for Arcadia on the girls’ side with wins in both the 100- and 400-meter dashes. Arcadia’s Hermione Carreon and Malania Tullius were second in the high jump and pole vault, respectively, while Kalani Vazquez came in third in the shot put.
For the G-E-T girls, Charlee McCutchen took second in the triple jump and Rylyn Simmons placed second in the discus throw. The Red Hawks’ third-place finishers were Anya Wolfe in the 800-meter run and Audrey Swenson in the 300-meter hurdles.
