Sonsalla walk-off secures first win for Arcadia softball

In a game that featured plenty of rain, extra innings and a walk-off to end the night, the Arcadia High School softball team earned its first win of the season last week.

Senior Whitney Sonsalla delivered the winning hit in the bottom of the 10th inning in the game at Arcadia High School last Tuesday to push Arcadia past Viroqua by a 5-4 score. 

The win followed a loss to Fall Creek on Monday.

Arcadia is supposed to continue play this week with a home game against Westby on Tuesday before G-E-T visits on Thursday.

Fall Creek 14 Arcadia 7

Arcadia started last week with a nonconference game that saw a flurry of offense from both dugouts.

Visiting Fall Creek built a 7-0 lead through the first four-and-a-half innings last Monday, but the Raiders found themselves back in the game in the final innings.

Arcadia tied the game with their own offensive breakout, tying the game at seven in the bottom of the seventh inning before Fall Creek opened the eighth inning with seven straight scores to end the game.

Justine Sonsalla recorded a pair of hits, including a triple, for Arcadia. Teammate Kaitlyn Bremer had two hits to go with three RBIs and the game-tying score in the bottom of the seventh inning on a groundout from Kanah Slaby.

Kiley Fitzpatrick had a pair of hits for Arcadia, and Samantha Berg hit a double. Bremer pitched her way to six strikeouts and four walks while allowing 18 hits.

Arcadia 5 Viroqua 4 

The Raiders earned their first win of the season last Tuesday in another game that needed extra innings to reach a final score.

After Bremer stole both second and third base in the bottom of the 10th inning, the junior scored on a bunt from Whitney Sonsalla for the walk-off win.

Bremer made her presence felt in the Coulee Conference matchup, hitting 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI and two doubles. Brynn Aspen also had a productive day at the plate for Arcadia with three hits, including a double.

Arcadia took a 3-0 lead in the third inning before Viroqua took the lead back with four unanswered runs over the next three innings. The Raiders got the game tied up again in the bottom half of the seventh inning when Justine Sonsalla scored on a single from Fitzpatrick.

Bremer struck out 12 batters, allowing six hits and walking three.
