Wrestling Roundup: Indee wrestlers win six of 10 duals
It was a busy week of team competition as the Independence/Gilmanton wrestling team won six of 10 dual meets last week.
The Indees won two of three at a home competition with Eau Claire North, Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau varsity reserve and Holmen varsity reserve on Tuesday. The team then split with Tomah and Amherst on Thursday before going 3-1 at the Dragon Duals, hosted by the Osseo-Fairchild co-op team on Saturday.
The Indees are scheduled for more dual competitions this week as the team was set to compete in a triangular at La Crosse Central on Tuesday. The team will have a nine-day break before beginning Dairyland Competition in Blair-Taylor on Jan. 23.
Indee Triple Duals
The Indees won two of three nonconference dual matches at home last week Tuesday.
I/G picked up wins over Eau Claire North, 48-30, and the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau/Melrose-Mindoro varsity reserve team, 34-31, while falling to the Holmen varsity reserve team, 40-35.
The match against Holmen came down to the last match, which Holmen won by pin.
Grant Klimek, Sam Marsolek, Chase Back, Drew Bragger and Mason Severson all went 3-0 for the Indees. Marsolek, Bragger and Severson had three pins, Klimek had two pins and a technical fall and Back had two pins and a major decision.
James Carillo Taylor and Preston Solberg both won two matches.
Tomah Duals
The Indees split a pair of duals in Tomah, falling to the host team while beating Amherst.
I/G got pins from Marsolek, Klimek, Severson and Carillo Taylor in the 46-30 win over Amherst. Chase Back won his match, 13-0, while Landon Stamper, Solberg and Bragger all received forfeits.
Back, Solberg, Severson and Klimek all had pins against Tomah, while Marsolek won his match 8-0. Bragger received a forfeit.
The Indees had to forfeit the 106, 113 and 120-pound weight classes and suffered five pins in the 48-34 defeat.
Dragon Duals
The Indees went 3-1, losing only to the G/M varsity reserve team at Osseo-Fairchild on Saturday.
The Indees defeated Osseo-Fairchild/Augusta/Fall Creek, 59-12; Mondovi/Eleva-Strum, 33-27 and Black River Falls, 35-28. It couldn’t get its second win of the week over the GMVR team, falling 47-26.
Klimek, Marsolek and Back all went 4-0 in the tournament. Klimek and Back both had three pins and a forfeit, while Marsolek had two wins by technical fall, one pin and one forfeit. Morales, Bragger, Severson, Johnson, Stamper and Solberg all won two matches.
Arcadia picks up two wins at home triangular

The Arcadia wrestling team welcomed in a pair of opponents and sent them both on their way with losses at a home triangular last Tuesday.
The Raiders convincingly defeated Black River Falls 54-21 in their dual, with seven of those wins against the Tigers coming via pinfall.
Arcadia’s victorious wrestlers against Black River Falls were Zayden Sanchez (113 pounds), Ony Zaragoza (120), Landen Pehler (126), Logan Breska (132), Adalberto Ortiz (150), Derek Tamke (157), David Aguilar (165), Nicolas Esteban (175) and Austin Fernholz (190).
Zaragoza, Pehler, Breska, Ortiz, Aguilar, Esteban and Fernholz all pinned their opponents. Sanchez and Tamke were awarded forfeit victories.
Arcadia’s closer dual of the evening came against Stanley-Boyd, who the Raiders managed to beat 42-34. Of Arcadia’s seven wins, five were by pinfall and two were via forfeit.
The Raiders had pinfall victories courtesy of Pehler, Breska, Andy Monroy (138 pounds), Aguilar and Eric Rodriguez (215). Sanchez and Zaragoza were awarded the two wins via forfeit.
Stanley-Boyd actually outscored Arcadia 34-30 in matches wrestled on the mat, but the two forfeits were able to put the Raiders over the top.
Whitehall fourth, Arcadia fifth at Cadott Invitational

The Whitehall and Arcadia boys wrestling teams each found themselves inside the top five of the team standings at a tournament over the past weekend.
Last Saturday at the Cadott Invitational, the Norse placed fourth in the boys team standings with 357 points and the Raiders were behind them in fifth at 346 points. Ahead of them were Glenwood City (532.5 points), Hayward (530.5) and Cadott (407).
Arcadia had three wrestlers place second in their respective weight classes: Logan Breska (132 pounds), David Aguilar (165) and Nicolas Esteban (175). Breska and Esteban had first-round byes and won two matches before falling in the finals, while Aguilar picked up three wins before losing in the championship match.
Other notable placers for the Raiders were Ony Zaragoza (113) in third and the trio of Zayden Sanchez (106), Austin Fernholz (190) and Eric Rodriguez (215) in fourth.
Three Whitehall wrestlers earned third-place finishes in their weight classes: Frank Juresh (106 pounds), Kivin Juresh (120) and Evander Peterson (157). All three of them had a first-round bye, won their quarterfinal match, lost in the semifinals and then ended their day with a win in the third-place match.
Other top placing wrestlers for the Norse were Devin Hutsell (175) in fourth and both Luke Matejka (190) and Mason Bautch (285) in fifth.
On the girls’ side of things, Arcadia’s Kalyce Sobotta won two matches before falling in the finals to place second in the 132-pound bracket. Additionally for the Raiders, Ava Knopps (185 pounds) registered a third-place finish while Madison Mahutga (107), Linnet Barrios (145) and Linsy Cruz (152) each were fifth in their respective brackets.
Whitehall’s Ivonne Ortiz-Rojas went 2-1 at the tournament to place third in the 100-pound bracket.
